The Ones: Casanova’s “2AM” [ft. Tory Lanez and David

Davido and CasanovaWith artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

It’s a talent in its own right to know when to step aside and give the spotlight to your guests. And on Casanova’s latest single “2AM,” the Brooklyn rapper does just that, as he follows the lead of Tory Lanez and Davido for his first venture into a thriving Afrobeats genre.
In recent years, as both hip-hop and pop have realized the reach of Afrobeats, some have succeeded and others have failed in their attempt to capture the genre’s global audience. On “2AM,” Casanova doesn’t do too much, riding the club circuit-ready, kick-drum heavy 30 Roc instrumental with true to Brooklyn bars: “I’m from Flatbush, you know the Gaza/She a rider, met her at Kings Plaza.” The versatile Canadian, Tory Lanez, handles the hook, approaching the song in his lightest, highest-pitched melody. But the energy of the song and dance intensity of the party picks up when the Nigerian giant, Davido, enters the track. Though Casanova deviating from Brooklyn street rap wasn’t expected, he made the right move tapping Davido, who continues to turn everything he touches into gold.
